Relate publishes findings of a study which looks at distress in relationships
A study recently published by Relate found that 18% of married or cohabiting couples in the UK are in a 'distressed relationship' - an estimated 2.87 million people.
The report defines a ‘distressed’ relationship as “one with a severe level of relationship problems, which has a clinically significant negative impact on partner’s wellbeing.” The same study found that 9.2% had considered divorce or separation at some point during their relationship.
The report highlighted that “relationship support services are effective at improving relationship quality” and that in order to ensure people benefitted from the support offered, the “barriers of accessibility, availability and affordability” need to be overcome.
Following publication of the report, Relate launched their Breaking Point Appeal which aims to subsidise their services in order to assist those families in need of their help.
We would always recommend that in appropriate circumstances parties attempt counselling where there is a possibility that the relationship can be saved, particularly where there are children involved. Even if counselling is unable to preserve the marriage it may help the parties come to terms with the breakdown in as sensitive a way as possible.
In the event that your relationship cannot be preserved through counselling we can offer a service aimed at dealing with all aspects of the separation as sensitively and smoothly as possible. All our family lawyers are members of Resolution and follow their Code of Practice, ensuring that matters are dealt with in a constructive and respectful manner, encouraging agreement between the parties.
Ending a relationship is a difficult decision to make and comes with a whole host of questions: What are the legal implications? How do we put in place arrangements for the children? What are the financial implications?
We can advise you on all aspects of your separation, divorce or civil partnership dissolution to enable you to make informed decisions on how best to proceed. We can offer a free initial consultation to help you explore all of your options.
